Alphabet Q2 revenue tops $119.8B, but $205B capex ceiling sinks GOOGL 6%
Google Cloud accelerated to 82% growth on TPU and AI infrastructure demand — then Alphabet raised full-year capex guidance for the second time this year.
GOOGL fell more than 6% Thursday after Alphabet lifted its 2026 capital-expenditure ceiling to $195–$205 billion, roughly $17.9 billion above the FactSet consensus of $187.1 billion and the second upward revision this year. The company had guided to $180–$190 billion as recently as April.
The rest of the print was, by any conventional read, strong. Consolidated revenue rose 24% to $119.8 billion, ahead of the LSEG consensus at $116.93 billion. Operating income climbed 30% to $40.8 billion, with margin expanding two points to 34%. Reported EPS came in at $9.11, though that number is distorted by a $98.0 billion net gain on equity securities that added $6.26 to diluted EPS; adjusted EPS of $2.85 slightly missed the $2.89 LSEG mark.
The engine driving the story is Google Cloud. Segment revenue hit $24.8 billion on 82% growth, an acceleration from 63% in Q1 and 48% in Q4 2025. Operating income tripled to $8.8 billion from $2.8 billion a year earlier. On the call, Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian said customers are spending 50% more, and the 10-Q attributes the $11.1 billion year-over-year lift to demand for TPU systems and AI infrastructure.
Services held up too. The segment posted $94.5 billion, up 15%, with Search & other at $63.3 billion (up 17%, a hair below the $63.4 billion whisper) and YouTube ads at $11.1 billion, up 13%.
So why the selloff? Because the market is pricing the denominator, not the numerator. Q2 capex ran $44.9 billion. Alphabet raised $49.6 billion in equity in June and issued another $20.3 billion in senior unsecured notes during the quarter, a funding stack that looks less like a cash-rich advertising business and more like a hyperscaler leaning on capital markets to keep pace. CFO Anat Ashkenazi told analysts 2027 spending would “increase significantly.”
That’s the tell. The 2008 TARP-era investor reflex, reward the operating beat, punish the balance-sheet dilution, is doing familiar work here. Cloud is compounding faster than the Street modeled, but Alphabet is signaling that the bill for staying in the AI infrastructure race resets upward every ninety days. Q3 2026 laps the Search acceleration that began in Q3 2025, and the capex line laps nothing at all.
