SMBs using AI pull 3× ahead of peers as 'interested but not started' cohort collapses to 1.5%
Pax8's Q2 2026 Pulse finds 61% of small businesses actively using AI and 29% stuck in experimentation, even as Salesforce's Agentforce ARR hits $800M.
The share of American small businesses describing themselves as “interested but haven’t started” on AI has collapsed from 9% to 1.5% in a single quarter, an 83% drop that effectively marks the end of the wait-and-see cohort. That’s the through-line of Pax8’s Q2 2026 Pulse, a Propeller Insights survey of 402 U.S. small business leaders at firms ranging from 5 to 499 employees, and it reframes the AI adoption story from a diffusion curve into a sorting event.
The sorting is already showing up in outcomes. AI-using SMBs report they’re roughly three times more likely than non-users to say they’re ahead of competitors on technology (31% versus 12%), more confident in growth (65% versus 56%), and more than twice as likely to have raised tech spending in the past year (53% versus 24%). The lagging cohort isn’t shrinking gradually. It’s being absorbed into experimentation, which climbed from 25% to 28.9% quarter-over-quarter, while active AI use held essentially flat at 61%, down a statistical hair from 62% in Q1.
Aggregate tech spend tells the harder story. The share holding or increasing budgets slid from 97% to 89%, and the “increasing” subset fell from 48.5% to 42%. Yet 49% of the businesses that slowed or cut spending still agree AI will be required to stay competitive within three years. That’s not skepticism. It’s deferred obligation, which is how bubbles historically become mandates.
For niche operators like LemonLime, the collapse of the fence-sitter cohort is the opening: SMBs have decided, and the question is now vendor, not verdict.
Salesforce’s Q4 fiscal 2026 print confirms the same demand shape at the top of the stack. Agentforce ARR reached $800 million, up 169% year-over-year, across 29,000 closed deals and 2.4 billion agentic work units processed to date, against total RPO of $72.4 billion. The 2017 SaaS-consolidation playbook rhymes here: adoption bifurcates, then pricing power accrues to whoever owns the workflow.
