JPMorgan lifts S&P 500 target to 8,000 as cloud backlogs top $2.3T, hyperscaler FCF turns negative

Cloud backlogs across the top four providers rose 16% quarter-over-quarter to $2.3T while Bank of America projects aggregate hyperscaler FCF at −$64B for 2026.

JPMorgan lifted its year-end S&P 500 target to 8,000 from 7,800 on August 10, joining at least seven brokerages now clustered at that level, with Goldman Sachs having moved from 7,600 to the same round number. Strategist Dubravko Lakos-Bujas also raised the bank’s 2026 EPS estimate to $365 from $350 and 2027 to $420 from $390. Goldman models a more restrained $340 and $385 for the same years, meaning the consensus price target has converged even as the earnings math underneath it hasn’t.

The bull case rests on one line item: cloud backlogs across the top four hyperscalers now exceed $2.3 trillion, up 16% from Q1. “As elevated backlogs convert into recognized revenue, cloud growth should remain well supported, helping validate rising AI capex,” Lakos-Bujas wrote. Microsoft Azure cleared $100 billion in annual sales last quarter for the first time. AWS grew 36.7%, its fastest print in 18 quarters.

The bear case is on the same balance sheets. Bank of America projects aggregate hyperscaler free cash flow across eight companies at roughly $180 billion in 2025, then −$64 billion in 2026, −$144 billion in 2027, and −$186 billion in 2028. Aggregate FCF margins are modeled at −2.8% this year, against a 10%-to-20% band that held across most of the past decade. Alphabet’s FCF turned negative in Q2 for the first time since its 2004 IPO.

The capex line explains the inversion. Alphabet, Amazon, Microsoft, and Meta are projected to spend $725 billion to $760 billion this year; BofA models roughly $860 billion in 2026 and nearly $1.2 trillion in 2027. Reuters estimates operating cash flow rises about $340 billion across 2025–2027 while capex rises roughly $534 billion over the same window. The gap is the story.

What Wall Street is doing, in effect, is pricing the backlog as revenue and treating the negative FCF as a timing problem rather than a structural one. That’s the same framing the telecom sector received in 1999, when forward contracted demand justified capex that outran cash generation by multiples. The backlog was real. So was the overbuild.
