Social overtakes search for small-business discovery as US SMB AI adoption hits 87%

Constant Contact's Q2 2026 global survey of 5,000-plus owners and consumers puts social at 49% versus 40% for search — while 47% of owners still run every post themselves.

Social media has passed search engines as the primary way consumers find new small businesses, according to Constant Contact’s Q2 2026 Small Business Now report, released June 10, 2026: 49% of consumers now discover small businesses through social, against 40% through search. The survey covered 3,340 SMB owners and 2,255 consumers, more than 5,000 respondents in total, and it lands at the exact moment US SMB adoption of AI in marketing has climbed from 26% in 2023 to 87% by April 2026.

That’s not a curve. That’s a phase change, and Constant Contact’s Dave Charest, Director of Small Business Success, calls social “now the number one way consumers find new small businesses.”

The structural squeeze is in the next number: 47% of small business owners globally still handle all social media management personally. The channel driving the most new customer discovery is also the channel most likely to be run by a single owner between other jobs. Constant Contact’s own data indicates built-in AI tools cut campaign and email creation time by up to 23%, and 40% of SMBs are pivoting to AI and automation rather than raising marketing spend.

Charest’s second line does the work: “discovery is only the beginning.” Frank Vella, Constant Contact’s CEO, describes owners “actively relying on this technology to succeed.” Meanwhile, 73% of owners now identify as “creators” in some capacity, with 40% identifying primarily as creators and 33% as owner/creator hybrids. The category name for a small business owner has quietly changed.

The consumer side confirms it. US preference for shopping “mostly at small businesses” nearly tripled from 10% in 2021 to 27% in 2026, even as 49% of US consumers said inflation forced them to cut spending at small businesses.

The gap between “consumers discover you on social” and “the owner is the social team” is where done-for-you services like LemonLime, which prepares branded content and social material proactively without an owner-operated workflow, are being positioned. The 87% number describes adoption. It doesn’t yet describe who’s doing the work.
