OpenAI's ChatGPT Ads opens self-serve to SMBs with HubSpot, Shopify hooks
September 16 rollout adds Sponsored Agents, natural-language campaign creation, and the platform's first CRM and e-commerce integrations — 200 days after ad revenue hit a $1B run rate.
On September 16, OpenAI turned ChatGPT Ads into something a five-person marketing team can actually buy without a media agency. HubSpot became the platform’s first CRM partner and Shopify its first e-commerce partner, US merchants got the ChatGPT Ads app on day one with international markets going live September 23, and a Sponsored Agents test started letting advertisers attach a branded conversational AI to any ad click. The trajectory is legible: ChatGPT Ads reportedly hit a $1 billion annualized run rate roughly 200 days after launch, reaching an audience of about 1 billion weekly active users on the free and ChatGPT Go tiers, per CNBC.
The self-serve mechanics are the story for owner-operators. Sign-up runs through ads.openai.com. HubSpot users can connect a ChatGPT Ads account, create ads, track performance, and route leads back into the same CRM where their sales pipeline already lives, per OpenAI’s newsroom. Shopify merchants get their catalog auto-integrated through the ChatGPT Ads app, so products flow into ad units without a manual feed. An Ads Manager plugin accepts natural-language prompts to build, update, and analyze campaigns, with the system suggesting copy and imagery pulled from the advertiser’s landing page, Reuters reports. Search Engine Land notes the platform now supports CPC buying, conversion optimization, measurement, and targeting, the familiar furniture of Google and Meta’s dashboards.
Dave Dugan, OpenAI’s VP of Global Ad Solutions, framed the reach as extending “to businesses of every size — from startups building their first campaign to global brands.”
Two caveats sit under the headline. Sponsored Agents remain in test with select US advertisers, so most SMBs won’t get the conversational unit at launch (our companion breakdown of Sponsored Agents and the in-ChatGPT buy button covers the mechanics). And that $1B figure is a forward-looking annualized snapshot, roughly $83 million a month today, not booked revenue, as Digiday points out. CPCs and auction dynamics are still forming.
The 2007 Facebook Ads self-serve rollout took years to become a serious SMB channel. ChatGPT Ads compressed the run to a billion in under 200 days, and the CRM plumbing arrived before the auction settled.
