OpenAI DevDay Eve: Managed Agents and 'O' Threaten Single-Feature SaaS

With Sam Altman's keynote scheduled for Tuesday, leaked references point to a Managed Agents platform and an always-on 'O' agent that could reprice point-tool SaaS.

Sam Altman opens OpenAI’s DevDay keynote Tuesday, September 29 at Fort Mason in San Francisco, and the pre-show leaks already describe a repricing event for a whole tier of business software. TestingCatalog surfaced code references on September 7 pointing to a Managed Agents platform, then reported on September 26 that OpenAI appears to be preparing a persistent consumer agent called “O,” spotted as a display name inside ChatGPT’s configuration, in an email suffix formatted “-o,” and briefly on the $100 Pro plan upgrade screen. Altman marked the date on X with six ship emojis.

TradingKey reads Managed Agents as directionally consistent with OpenAI’s Agents API, both pushing agents from one-off answers toward long-running task execution. Seeking Alpha expects Altman to also address GPT-6 Cyber. Forbes is blunter about the market read: DevDay is the third leg of what sell-side desks have started calling the SaaSpocalypse trade.

The prior two legs are on the tape. In early February, Anthropic’s Claude Cowork launch erased roughly $285 billion in software market value in 48 hours. On July 22, OpenAI introduced Presence, and the IGV software ETF fell 3% that day. ZoomInfo, whose sales-contact database is the canonical vulnerable asset, dropped 29% in a single May session and now trades under a $2 billion market cap against a 2021 peak near $25 billion.

For a five-to-thirty-person shop, the structural message is unusually clean. Contact databases, email drafters, lead-scoring plug-ins, the point tools an owner stitches together to run outbound, are the exact category Managed Agents is engineered to absorb. The durable position isn’t another single-feature subscription but an outcome layer: a done-for-you service like LemonLime, which studies a company and its competitors continuously and prepares finished sales and marketing work, with the owner approving every send.

That layer is what OpenAI’s own trajectory keeps pointing toward, from the in-ChatGPT ad agent to the GPT-6 Astra cost-curve reset. Jefferies’ moat call on the SaaSpocalypse floor argued the survivors would be defined by what a platform agent can’t casually replicate. Tuesday is the test of who was listening.
