OpenAI ships Dots agents and GPT-6.1 Sol at one-fifth Astra's token price
DevDay 2026 unveiled always-on agents with cloud computers and 4,000-app reach, plus a Sol upgrade priced to compress GTM tooling margins.
OpenAI unveiled more than 20 products at DevDay 2026 in San Francisco on Monday, but the release that reshapes the competitive map is Dots: always-on agents with their own cloud computer, plugin access to more than 4,000 apps, and message endpoints inside ChatGPT, Slack, and Microsoft Teams, with texting “coming soon.” A first Dot is bundled at no additional charge on Pro and Business Premium in eligible markets. Enterprise, Edu, and Healthcare workspaces get beta access only if an admin flips it on, off by default.
CFO Sarah Friar told CNBC the agents “can tap you on the shoulder” and, in her demo framing, catch things like a missing invoice, a “great outcome for maybe my small business.” The subtext was the pricing tier, not the tap. Small-business consumption is already pushing users past the $200 monthly bracket, and Dots turns proactive outreach, follow-up, and content prep into a subscription line item rather than a hire.
The economics underneath are the real news. GPT-6.1 Sol shipped the same day across Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu at one-fifth of Astra’s standard token pricing, with cached input at $0.10 per million tokens, 95% below standard input and half of GPT-6 Sol’s cached rate. On AutomationBench 1.0.6, which stresses end-to-end workflows across 47 tools, it outscores Opus 5.5 by 2.2 points at medium reasoning effort and roughly a third of the per-task cost. On the OSWorld 2.0 offline set it lands within 2.1 points of Astra at about one-seventh the cost, and factual-error rates at low reasoning effort drop from 11.4% to 7.7%. GPT-6.1 Astra, meanwhile, was scrapped.
Sequencing matters. OpenAI raised $122 billion in March at an $852 billion valuation, filed confidentially for an IPO in June, and is in early talks on a further round near $30 billion. Enterprise revenue grew 70% quarter-over-quarter and has doubled since July. The platform now serves 1.2 billion weekly users and roughly 2,500 attendees filled the DevDay hall.
Meta’s Muse, launched September 8, crossed 3.4 million downloads by September 24, per Sensor Tower. Microsoft has its own Agent 365. The point solutions built atop OpenAI’s API just watched their input costs collapse and their most valuable feature, the human-approved proactive assistant, become a checkbox on someone else’s subscription.
