Meta burns cash as $34.9B AI capex outruns operating flow; ad prices up 14%
META closed down nearly 7% Thursday after Q3 free cash flow swung to negative $2.12B — the first negative print since 2012 — even as average price per ad rose 14% year-over-year.
Meta posted negative free cash flow of $2.12 billion for the quarter ended September 30, its first sub-zero print since Q2 2012, as capital expenditures of $34.91 billion outran $32.79 billion in operating cash flow. Shares fell about 6.6% Thursday to $651.05 and finished the week down more than 9%.
The headline numbers were otherwise strong. Revenue rose 26% year-over-year to $64.60 billion, and Q4 guidance of $73–$76 billion implies continued acceleration. What spooked the tape, per CNBC, was the raised capex floor (full-year 2026 guidance narrowed to $135–$145 billion, up from a prior $130 billion floor) landing alongside credit-default-swap spreads at all-time highs. A $135 billion-plus annual build is no longer a growth story investors can price without reference to its financing.
Underneath the capex panic sits the mechanism meant to pay for it. Average price per ad rose 14% year-over-year while impressions across the Family of Apps rose 10%, a combination that’s not seasonal drift. The CFO’s commentary explicitly credits AI-driven “more efficient monetization” as already delivering incremental ad revenue, which is the polite phrasing for structural auction repricing. The CFO’s framing of AI-driven monetization is what reconciles the capex line to the revenue line, if you believe the thesis.
Wall Street, mostly, does. Six of the seven firms Benzinga tracked raised price targets Thursday, with Susquehanna lifting its target to $850 from $650 even as the stock sold off beneath them.
The divergence is the story. Analysts are valuing the ad engine; the businesses feeding that engine are paying its invoice. Muse adoption and the 14% ad-price increase are the same event viewed from opposite ends of the auction. Meta has told the market which end it intends to optimize.
