OpenAI to auto-rewrite ChatGPT ads by default Oct. 29 as platform hits 89 countries, 100,000 advertisers

Self-serve ChatGPT campaigns will run AI-rewritten headlines, images, destinations and translations without per-version approval unless founders opt out before the end of the month.

On Oct. 29, OpenAI will flip “creative enhancements” to on by default for every self-serve ChatGPT advertiser, handing its own system permission to rewrite headlines, swap descriptions, resize images, auto-translate copy and reselect landing-page destinations without per-version approval. The email that reached advertisers Oct. 20 pointed to Oct. 30; the help page says Oct. 29. Either way, founders have nine or ten days to opt out of four enhancement types bundled under a single toggle.

The timing isn’t coincidence. On Oct. 21, OpenAI said ChatGPT Ads now reaches 89 countries after adding 26 new markets (it names 11 in the post) and has drawn 100,000 cumulative advertisers since the Feb. 9 US pilot opened at a $60 CPM. More than 1.2 billion weekly users sit on the other side of the auction, split between the ad-supported Free and Go tiers and the ad-free Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education plans. Asmita Dubey, chief digital and marketing officer at L’Oreal, headlines the launch roster.

Scale is arriving faster than the product’s own self-description. OpenAI’s May 5 Ads Manager docs still recommend headlines of about 16 characters and descriptions of about 32. Adthena counted 7,306 unique ChatGPT advertisers the week of July 9 and 12,075 the week of Aug. 31, roughly 65% growth in seven weeks. Ranketta lists a 37-currency billing table with minimums of $25/day, £15/day and €15/day, putting the channel inside a founder’s reach anywhere the Ads Manager (still Beta-labeled) is live.

What’s defaulting on is control over execution. Barry Schwartz first published the OpenAI email at Search Engine Roundtable on Oct. 20 at 3:35 p.m., and paid-search practitioner Melissa Mackey flagged the pattern: Meta’s Advantage+ already generates up to 150 variations without per-version preview, and Meta set Oct. 28 as default-on for product browsing, citing a 3% average conversion gain from an August experiment covering about 117,700 advertisers. Google’s AI Max auto-upgrade on broad-match, and the March 20 opt-out window for AI voice-over on existing Performance Max videos, run the same play.

SE Ranking makes the risk concrete. In July the firm tested 50,006 commercial prompts across 20 niches: ChatGPT served ads on 25.94% of them, and 14.35% of those had no real connection to the prompt. If the platform now rewrites creative using whatever brand context it can scrape from a homepage, that homepage becomes the one variable the founder still owns.

That’s the small-business job here. LemonLime continuously studies a company’s website, content and competitive positioning and prepares finished sales and marketing work proactively, so the brand context feeding ChatGPT and Google reflects the current business rather than a scraped snapshot. The pattern is familiar to anyone who read our earlier piece on how EU small businesses grew AI-agent use 8x in five months: channels are opening faster than inputs are maturing. The toggle flips Oct. 29. The content question doesn’t have a deadline.
