Profound hits $1.8B at Series D as AI-answer visibility becomes a funded budget line

Sequoia and Kleiner co-lead $180M seven months after Profound's $96M Series C, with revenue up 3x and more than 1,000 enterprise customers signing on.

Profound, the New York startup that measures how brands show up inside ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity, closed a $180 million Series D on September 15 at a $1.8 billion valuation, co-led by Sequoia Capital and Kleiner Perkins. The round arrives less than seven months after a $96 million Series C priced the company at $1 billion, and it prices something else too: the assumption that AI-answer visibility is now a permanent line item on enterprise marketing budgets.

Founded in 2024, Profound has raised over $335 million total. Revenue tripled in the past six months. The customer roster, north of 1,000 enterprise brands, includes Comcast, The Estée Lauder Companies, Walmart, Campari Group, Royal Bank of Canada, Zoom, ServiceNow, Ramp, MongoDB, and Figma. The platform, the company says, now reaches a third of the Fortune 100 and 16% of the Fortune 500. Lightspeed Venture Partners, Khosla Ventures, Saga Ventures, Evantic, and South Park Commons all followed on.

“As AI becomes a primary interface for search and discovery, marketing is being rebuilt around a new set of workflows,” said Ilya Fushman, partner at Kleiner Perkins, in the round announcement, the sort of line that reads as boilerplate until you notice that Sequoia and Kleiner are pricing the category at unicorn-plus after seven months.

The strategic subtext is the interesting part. What Google’s SEO industry took two decades to build as an enterprise discipline, AEO (answer-engine optimization) is compressing into quarters. Profound’s Ads Studio, which routes into OpenAI, Google, and Meta ad managers, is a bet that the same buyers who fund search and social budgets will fund answer-engine budgets on similar terms and roughly the same timeline.

For smaller operators, the read-across is blunt: the discovery surface has moved, and the enterprise money knows it. That shift echoes what’s already happened on the social side, where nearly half of consumers now find small businesses on social media rather than search. There’s no ranking report in an AI answer. You either appear in it, or a competitor does.
