ChatGPT Ads for Shopify goes global today, opening OpenAI's $1B ad channel to any merchant
OpenAI's Shopify app — which auto-syncs product catalogs to ChatGPT campaigns — expands beyond the US on Sept. 23, giving SMBs self-serve access to a $1B-run-rate platform reaching 1 billion weekly ChatGPT users.
OpenAI’s ChatGPT Ads app for Shopify becomes available internationally today, extending a self-serve ad channel that already runs in more than 40 countries and, per OpenAI’s own disclosures to CNBC, has reached a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate in roughly 200 days. Any Shopify merchant outside the US can now install the app from the Shopify App Store, auto-sync a product catalog, and launch a campaign against ChatGPT’s 1 billion weekly active users without touching a feed pipeline or a second dashboard.
The velocity here matters more than the milestone. OpenAI describes its own progression bluntly: it began with a “managed-sales, agency, and partner-led model,” expanded to more than 50 technology and measurement partners, launched Ads Manager in May, and now says SMBs “now represent a material share of the business.” That’s the entire arc of a modern ad platform compressed into a single fiscal year, and it’s happening while OpenAI positions the ad line as part of a “diversified business model” ahead of an expected IPO.
Ads run against the free tier and OpenAI’s Go subscribers, the free tier, CNBC reports, “makes up the vast majority of its 1 billion weekly active users.” That’s the inventory. The Shopify integration is the distribution: catalog sync, campaign management, and performance tracking all sit inside the merchant’s existing Shopify surface, which is what makes the channel legible to owner-operators who can’t staff an agency relationship.
Two adjacent moves fill in the picture. Last week HubSpot became the first CRM to integrate with ChatGPT Ads, offering build-to-attribution workflows inside HubSpot plus a $750 ad-spend match for new accounts through Sept. 30. That announcement sat alongside HubSpot’s analyst-day rollout of Breeze and its open CRM stack, signaling how quickly the SMB tooling layer is repositioning around ChatGPT as an acquisition surface.
One caveat. Today’s international launch covers standard inventory only. OpenAI’s more ambitious format, wiring branded agents and buy-buttons directly into ChatGPT ad units, remains in US-only testing. Merchants outside the US are getting the channel before they get the transaction layer that’ll eventually define it.
