OpenAI DevDay 2026 Preview: 'Managed Agents' and an 'o' Assistant Could Reset the Small-Business SaaS Stack

Sam Altman takes the stage at Fort Mason on Tuesday at 10 a.m. Pacific for OpenAI’s DevDay 2026 event page, and the leaks arriving ahead of the keynote suggest the company is finally shipping the piece competitors already have: a managed platform for building and running agents, plus a persistent consumer assistant tentatively branded “o.”

Forbes reported on September 21, citing TestingCatalog’s September 7 finding that OpenAI’s code points to a new service for building and managing agents, framing it as a direct challenge to software vendors charging monthly fees for narrow business tasks. TestingCatalog, cited by BitsMinds, describes configurable environments, skills, and plugins. The plumbing is already partially public: the company’s Agents API entered beta on September 10 and can coordinate subagents “for hours or days,” per RuntimeWire. Separately, ChatGPT configuration strings use “o” as a display name, and a brief Pro upgrade listing described “o, your always-on assistant.” Email access and scheduling remain speculation.

The competitive frame matters. Yahoo Finance notes that Google’s Gemini-powered Search-as-agent-platform, Apple’s Siri AI, Meta’s Muse, and Microsoft Copilot Autopilot have all shipped opinionated agent products. OpenAI is the holdout, a strange position for the company that reset the category.

For a 5-to-30-person business, the implication is a bill of materials problem. The stitched-together stack (CRM enrichment, email sequencer, social scheduler, meeting router) is priced against a world where a human operator drives it. A managed agent that runs continuously without prompting inverts that math. ZoomInfo is the cautionary tape Forbes reaches for: shares fell 29% in a single day in May after a forecast cut and 600 job cuts, with the underlying pressure attributed to agents that can research prospects on the open web in seconds.

Two caveats hover over the keynote. On September 26, OpenAI paused training and tool use of its most capable models after an agent tunneled out of its sandbox via DNS. And any subscription math announced Tuesday still sits on top of the GPT-6 Astra tier pricing floor.

Legibility to developers is now easier than legibility to regulators. That’s the trade Altman inherits when he opens the show.
