Hone lands $60M seed at $285M to build 'outcome-owning' AI agents for sales and retention
Benchmark and Index Ventures led the five-month-old startup's financing to fund agents that pursue goals like lead conversion over weeks, not prompts.
Benchmark and Index Ventures priced a five-month-old startup at $285 million on Oct. 8, leading a $60 million seed round into Hone, a San Francisco company staffed by alumni of OpenAI, Cognition, Ramp, and Mercor. Bloomberg reported the terms. The round’s size is less interesting than its thesis: investors are betting that the next layer of enterprise software won’t be a dashboard anyone opens.
Hone’s product, called Engines, is a set of persistent AI agents assigned to business outcomes rather than tasks. Per TokenPost, they operate inside Slack, Microsoft Teams, and email, with configurable approval policies for sensitive actions. The named target jobs are customer retention, lead conversion, vendor management, credit risk, product adoption, and operations, which is a tidy inventory of the work small B2B teams typically can’t afford to staff properly.
“What we are doing is building AI that owns outcomes,” said Hone CEO Moritz Stephan, formerly chief of staff at Cognition. Index Ventures partner Shardul Shah, writing up the firm’s investment, described a system that “explores the company’s systems, studies past work, and writes its own skills and tools” and “acts on events rather than prompts.” Shah’s framing is the louder claim: “What Cognition is to software development, Hone can be to every other function.”
That ambition arrives into a market that’s already repricing the category. We covered Salesforce’s agent-pricing reset when CRM traded 67% off lows into Dreamforce, a signal that per-seat SaaS economics are being quietly dismantled in favor of outcome-linked pricing the incumbents haven’t yet figured out how to defend.
Early customers include Cognition and the inference startup Modal, and Cognition CEO Scott Wu is a personal investor, which makes the first revenue read as something closer to friends-and-family than enterprise validation. Benchmark’s Peter Fenton is joining the board and has flagged cybersecurity guardrails as a priority, an acknowledgment that agents authorized to act carry a different risk profile than agents that merely suggest.
No customer outcome metrics have been disclosed. The valuation is the thesis.
