Anthropic posts $16.8B Q3 revenue, hits adjusted profit ahead of November IPO
Pre-IPO investor day disclosure shows $1.70 earned per compute dollar and 45% sequential growth, with a public listing targeted before Thanksgiving.
Anthropic told prospective investors behind closed doors in San Francisco this week that it generated $16.8 billion in third-quarter revenue, up 45% from $11.6 billion in Q2 and nearly four times the $4.7 billion it posted in Q1, according to attendees who relayed the figures to Reuters. The company said it was profitable on an adjusted basis and cash-flow positive, and that it earned $1.70 for every dollar spent on computing power, a figure CNBC reported via the Financial Times.
The disclosure is the clearest look yet at the economics of a frontier AI lab, and it’s being staged for a reason. Bloomberg reports formal IPO marketing could begin the week of November 9, with trading targeted before Thanksgiving on November 26. Dates remain fluid. Some prospective investors are already modeling fair value between $1.8 trillion and $2 trillion, well above the $965 billion mark set by May’s $65 billion funding round. Analysts who met with CEO Dario Amodei and CFO Krishna Rao earlier in the week told Reuters they expect a $110 billion annualized run rate by year-end.
The context matters. Last year, Anthropic’s revenue grew twelvefold to roughly $4.6 billion against operating losses north of $8 billion, and the company has committed at least $518 billion over a decade to cloud, compute, and infrastructure. A positive revenue-to-compute ratio is what makes that commitment legible to public markets rather than terrifying to them.
It also recontextualizes the pricing moves of the past two weeks. Anthropic’s 75% price cut on Haiku 5.5 and the Claude Startups and Marketplace expansion read differently when the vendor is cutting prices from a position of unit economics, not subsidy. Compare with OpenAI’s $50 billion run-rate correction and the Broadcom $42 billion convertible facility that lets Anthropic finance that compute without diluting equity further.
SiliconAngle noted the figures don’t specify gross versus net, and Anthropic hasn’t defined its profitability metric. That ambiguity is also the whole point of a pre-IPO investor day. The clarifying definitions arrive with the S-1.
