OpenAI puts computer-use inside Chrome for a 7M-user extension base

Work mode now operates signed-in tabs — LinkedIn, Salesforce, Gmail — on all ChatGPT plans, as of October 15.

OpenAI on October 15 pushed computer-use into its ChatGPT Chrome extension, turning a 7,000,000-user install base into something closer to an operations surface. Version 1.26.1005.11759, per the Chrome Web Store listing, splits the assistant into two modes: Chat reads text across loaded tabs, and Work clicks, types, submits, and downloads inside sites where the user is already signed in. OpenAI’s own examples name LinkedIn, Salesforce, and Gmail.

The company framed it on X as “bringing the power of computer use to anyone who uses Chrome” and said it’s “Available for all ChatGPT plans,” though, as PPC Land notes, neither the post nor the documentation specifies which plans actually include Work in Chrome. The underlying model, according to The Decoder, is GPT-6 Astra.

This is the DevDay thesis arriving in the one surface users don’t close. OpenAI’s September pivot to managed agents made sense in principle; shipping it as a Chrome extension to a seven-million-strong installed base is what makes it legible to a solo operator who was never going to touch a managed-agent SDK.

The sample prompts give the game away. “Compare these pricing pages against our requirements.” “Put the vendors in these tabs into my comparison sheet, with pricing, key features, and source links.” These are the exact prospecting and CRM-hydration loops that an unstaffed founder runs manually at the cost of an afternoon. The extension collapses them into supervised background work.

Safety sits in a per-site permission chrome with four options (Allow once, Allow for this site, Allow for all sites, Decline), and the all-sites option carries an Elevated Risk flag. One OpenAI prompt asks the assistant to fill a registration form “and stop before submitting,” which is to say the stop is user-specified; confirmation on sends and submits beyond that’s underspecified.

It lands the same week HubSpot started rewiring pricing from seats to outcomes. The seat was already a shaky unit of account. A browser agent operating a logged-in Salesforce tab is what finishes the argument.
